Princess Carat Size vs. Surface Area
The diamond size chart below shows how surface area increases with carat weight.
While most people think carat weight means size (or how big a diamond looks), carat is actually a measure of weight. Diamonds of the same carat weight can look bigger or smaller depending on how they are cut. For instance, a diamond with a deeper cut will appear smaller than a diamond with a shallower cut.
Why you ask? Well, imagine two men who weight 200 lbs (or 90 kgs) - but, one man if very short and the other is very, very tall. The tall man might look slender, while the short man would look quite fat. Diamonds are the same way. Diamonds with a "shorter" cut will look wider and appear larger in an engagement ring setting. This sounds great, but it can also hurt the diamonds ability to sparkle (same thing for diamonds cut too "tall").
